Common Causes of Pump Packing Leakage

Why pump packing leaks and what buyers should check before changing material.

Published 2026-06-16

Leakage is not always a material problem

Pump packing is designed to control leakage, not always eliminate every visible drop. In many pump services, a small controlled leakage helps cooling and lubrication. Problems begin when leakage becomes excessive, unstable, or difficult to adjust.

When buyers see leakage, the first reaction is often to change packing material. Sometimes that is necessary, but leakage can also come from equipment wear, incorrect installation, poor gland adjustment, or operating conditions that do not match the packing construction.

Common technical causes

Incorrect packing size is a frequent cause of poor sealing. If the packing cross section does not match the stuffing box and shaft dimensions, compression may be uneven. Worn shafts or sleeves can also damage new packing quickly and create leakage paths.

Overtightening the gland can create heat, friction, and premature packing damage. Undertightening can allow too much leakage. Poor flushing, dry running, abrasive particles, or unexpected chemical exposure can also shorten packing life.

What to inspect before inquiry

Before requesting replacement packing, check shaft or sleeve condition, stuffing box dimensions, current packing size, medium, temperature, pressure, speed if known, and whether flushing or cooling is available. Photos of the installation area can be useful when drawings are unavailable.

If the existing packing failed quickly, note the failure pattern. Was the packing burned, hardened, washed out, extruded, chemically attacked, or worn unevenly? These observations can help suppliers understand the service condition.

How sourcing support helps

Aisovra can help organize these details and communicate them with selected manufacturers. The goal is to make the inquiry specific enough for a practical material discussion and a more accurate quotation.

A cautious sourcing process is especially important for overseas buyers who need to compare several material options without relying on exaggerated product claims.
